I have a buyer for the VR-4, the funds will go towardmy new found bike addiction, and a BMW scan tool. I found a used full carbon Raleigh for about half of the original MSRP, or the cost of the same bike in Aluminum new.
I never thought I’d be into biking but 4 of my closest friends started up on it last year and have convinced me that it’s fun. I want to be able to bike the 30 round trip to Work by the end of the summed. I’ve got my fixie sorted out, as well an a town bike with a basket and stuff for running errunds. so after the road bike I’ll be looking for a good single track bike, then I’ll need a bike attachment or two for my Thule roof rack. I’m also thinking about getting a canoe, and trying to into fishing more.
I think I’ve given up on the car hobby. At least for now.

I’ve been an avid cyclist for most of my life, I love the technology and the fun of ridding fast. Here is my road bike, I got it last fall and finally have it sorted so I am very comfortable on it. Be wary of cheap bikes I don’t know who is building Raleigh these days but it is a lost brand. You might want to check out some more main steam brands like trek, giant, specialized etc... BMC is niche but they make very nice bikes.

Consider the following. Used Shimano 105 5700 groupset, good set of used low or medium profile wheels, those Trek/Giant/Specialized stem/bars/seatpost someone else just ripped off their new bike and want rid of cheap, and basically any appropriately sized frame. If you could build a fixie from found parts you can assemble this.
That Raleigh sucks in a bad way. Your SS/fixie sucks in a very good way. If that Raleigh fit me perfectly I’d take it over a 20K super bike that was impossible to make work for me. Why, fit trumps all when it comes to road bikes. No matter how ugly or hated on by me or anyone else. A geometry that puts you in the correct position is the only metric you should use when buying a bike.

I’m for sure going to test the bike before I buy to see if it’s comfortable. At the same time I’ve never ridden a serious road bike so I geuss I wouldn’t know what to look for.

Now you’re talking. Have a friend help to make sure the measurements are accurate. This guide will go a long ways towards helping sort out geometry. Length of knees to toes and waist to knees is different for everyone. Same for torso and arm length. You would not be drawn towards riding a bike if you were tall with short arms. Please post the rough frame dimensions it suggests.

If you would fit on this it would be levels of magnitude above that Raleigh. $100-$200 on a groupset and this would be the hottest bike in your county.

What a coincidence. As you were making this post I was just getting back home from purchasing a first road bike of my own. I found it on CL, saving $$$ over what it cost new - and it was still more money than I ever thought I’d spend on a bicycle.
It’s a Specialized Allez, 61cm with a polished aluminum frame (link below). I’m about 6'3" and the guy I bought it from is a bit taller and decided to move up to a 63cm frame so I think it should fit me well. He also said getting a professional fitting to get everything adjusted properly would be money well spent. I can’t wait to get some pedals for it and really try it out. On my short test ride the Allez felt like a sports car compared to my family sedan Giant Cypress hybrid. A completely different experience.

Good luck on your bike search. — A 15 mile ride should be a piece of cake!

Nice. I’m not quite as tall, at 6’1” but finding a used bike in a 58 and up frame is hard. 56 seems to be the average. I just bought an old Maruishi for 40 bucks as something to get started on while I save up a bit for a good bike. But man is it heavy. I was struggling to stay with a friend in his newer Cannondale while he wasn’t breaking a sweat.
I also was given a 80s magnesium Trek 400 but I think it’s way to small for me. Some one who didn’t know what they were doing tried to “fix” it at some point because it has a 26” mountain bike tire on the back. It does have a nice old Schwinn aluminum road bike wheel on the front. I’m probably goin to fix it up and give it to a buddy who’s a bit shorter than me.

Biking is a great thing to get addicted to. I never felt the mountain bike thing. I’m a pure roadie, but whatever. It’s all just flavors of the same passion.

I love single track. But road biking is great too.
